Amit Shah calls on CM Devendra Fadnavis

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to swiftly implement three new criminal laws throughout all commissionerates in the state.

This directive came during a review meeting on the rollout of these laws, which was attended by CM Fadnavis along with officials from both the Maharashtra government and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Implementation of new criminal laws in Maharashtra

As he led the meeting, Shah pressed the Maharashtra government to create an effective Directorate of Prosecution that aligns with the newly established laws—the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023; Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023; and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), 2023. These laws replace the traditional Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act.

The discussion focused on the present condition of the new provisions concerning policing, prisons, courts, prosecution, and forensics in Maharashtra. Shah highlighted that a key goal of these laws, introduced under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance, is to ensure that justice is served within three years—from the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) to the Supreme Court’s decision.

Shah has conducted similar meetings with various states in recent months, including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Haryana.
