Although the overall number of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune district has been on the decline, recent reports indicate a troubling rise in mortality associated with the disease. With the unfortunate passing of two patients, the death toll from GBS has now reached 11. The state health department clarifies that only 4 of these fatalities are directly attributed to GBS, while the remaining 7 have been classified as suspected cases.
GBS Death Toll Rises to 11 in Pune
No new suspected cases were reported on Wednesday. A 26-year-old woman from the Nanded City ( Pune ) area succumbed during her treatment at Kashibai Navale Hospital. She initially experienced diarrhea on January 15, which improved after medical intervention. However, on January 22, she began to feel weak and struggled to swallow liquids.
Following this, she was admitted to Sahyadri Hospital and later transferred to Navale Hospital for more extensive care. Unfortunately, her condition worsened, leading to her death on Tuesday (February 18).
Additionally, a 37-year-old man from Daund passed away while receiving treatment at Sassoon Hospital. He was admitted on February 10 due to a loss of function in his hands. The health department reported that he died Monday while on a ventilator, as his condition had become critical.
As of now, a total of 211 GBS cases have been documented in the state, with 42 reported in the Pune Municipal Corporation area, 14 in newly incorporated villages, and 32 in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Rural areas have recorded 33 cases, along with 10 from other districts. Out of these 211 patients, 183 have been officially diagnosed with GBS, while 28 remain under investigation as suspected cases.
